St Mawes Harbour is now part of the Fal & Helford Marine Special Area of Conservation (SAC), and the Trust is a member of the Advisory Group. Marine SACs were designated under the Habitats Directive (1994) and aim to protect habitats important for marine biodiversity. In the case of the Fal & Helford SAC, beds of eel grass and maerl were identified as the habitats, and each of these occur in St Mawes harbour. It is a key part of SAC management that existing activities and stakeholders should continue, but that any change should be considered in relation to its effect on the designated habitats. The SAC Advisory Group meets once a quarter. |
